Clamp height, and why a cart is not a bench

Every few months someone asks us to “just tick these real quick” in the alley. We will not. A vise that moves is a different instrument every time you lean on it.

Frequency is a function of the vibrating length you actually clamped, not the length you intended. If the jaw takes 5.5 inches of grip on Monday and 5.7 on Tuesday because someone eyeballed it, the Tuesday 6-iron will look softer. Players then buy a stiffer blank for a problem that was a scribe. Helene had the rail marked after the 2014 season, when a loose stop and a helpful intern produced a week of “quick” pitching wedges that were simply longer cantilevers. The intern does not work here. The scribe does.

Five and a half inches is not a law of the universe. It is the hangar’s law. Other benches use other heights. Comparing our number to a chart from a forum that used 5.0 inches is how you get a religious argument about 250 CPM. We write the height on the sheet. We write the mass. We write the humidity. If you take that sheet to another city, they can decide whether their vise is even in the same sport. That is the point of a protocol: it is portable as a description, not as a brag.

Carts, tailgates, folding tables

A cart has tires. Tires are springs. A folding table has hinges. A tailgate has a bumper. None of those are a 48-inch aluminum rail bolted to a bench that does not walk when the mass drops. We have watched a “mobile fitter” pluck a shaft on a tailgate in a parking lot on Douglas and then quote a flex letter. Maybe that person is good at other work. The number was a cartoon. Cartoons are fine at birthday parties. They are expensive inside a 4–PW stair.

The microphone boom is off the vise body on purpose. In 2014 a mount on the jaw added about four CPM of mechanical noise to every short iron. Short irons, louder jaws, dirtier numbers. We moved the boom. We still check it at open, along with the master bar. If you hear Helene swear at a set screw before 7:00, that is the check. It is cheaper than a week of bad stairs.

Grips that will not seat

Reminder ribs, undersize wraps, and grips that have turned to plastic in a sun-facing trunk will not sit square in the jaw. We shim rather than cheat the stop. The shim is noted. A cheat is how you fake a soft club and then sell a tube. Nobody here is paid on the tube, which is the only reason the shim exists as a habit instead of as a speech.

If you want a demo in the alley, you want a different kind of entertainment. If you want a number you can compare in January, you want the rail, the scribe, the mass, and a room that is not a parking lot. That is why Suite 8 has a door that faces the alley and a vise that does not roll. Come inside. Stand off the yellow tape. Watch the median of three ticks. Then decide whether your 6-iron is a liar, or whether the last person who “ticked it” was a cart.

We will keep declining alley jobs. The prairie has enough cartoons. The carbon sheet does not need another one.
